All Things Workplace: Disqus Comment Question for Readers. Help!

  • David Zinger · 1 year ago
I had some problems before but I do like the box to write the comment.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    David.

Ok, the box is good. What are the problems getting in? I may not be able to replicate them as the "owner" of the dashboard.

And...is the "community" thing easy to opt into or do I need to issue and ongoing invitation?
  • peter vajda · 1 year ago
Steve, what is "the community thing?" and what's the difference between reply and comment?
    Thanks in advance.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Peter,

The community thing offers the opportunity to follow specific threads as well as follow other comments which the registrant has made on other blogs. It's pretty cool if you want to see the totality of one's work and thinking. This would work for you and me because you are a guest writer elsewhere and I would--according to my understanding--automatically be able to see where you've posted and join your conversation there. I kind of like that ability.

As for Reply vs. Comment: You can "reply" to a specific comment and it's threaded that way for easier tracking. Or, you can simply "comment" on the post itself.

I have mentioned this elsewhere but I will say it again here: I think that Daniel Ha at Disqus is on to something with this. It is not intrusive, just different and has lots of possibilities. So I am going to give him the best shot possible. He's responsive, timely, and clearly into what he's developing.

Hope that clears up at least some things, Peter. Thanks for the direct questions.

Steve, is there a quick way to show me how ths works..

thanks in advance, and what does "unveified" mean?next to the "Post" command.

Everything displays nicely now, but when I first tried to use it, I couldn't get it to display properly until I reloaded the page in an IE tab. The community joining thing was kind of confusing because I was focused on leaving a comment, not joining another social network (I'm 56! My grey head will explode!). Personally, I hate having to register in order to comment, and if I'm feeling particularly tired or the site is someplace I don't frequent, I'll blow off leaving a comment. Having said that, I've decided I must return to moderating the comments on my blog because of sneaky spammers. I don't know that requiring registration would end that, but I'm not willing to go there, yet.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Robyn,

The thorough response is helpful and appreciated. The intent here wasn't to create the common social networking kind of community but to have a way for readers and commenters to follow particular threads of posts. So from that standpoint, one could use the word "community" and it would be as good as any other description.

What I don't want to do is anything that will deter readers from commenting, since that's always been a strength here at ATW. I am hoping that Disqus will promote vs. get in the way of that.

I believe that Daniel Ha is onto something here and it is a work in progress. He is very responsive (as you can tell from him jumping into the conversation). I'm going to see if there is something else that I can do from this end to help readers get more comfortable.

Thanks, Steve, for clarifying things for me. I agree that Daniel is on to
something and I was impressed, though not surprised, that he would want to
monitor the thread. That's what good geeks do. He's definitely someone to
watch; with his vision and commitment to excellence, he is probably a
    pleasure to know.

    Robyn,

I'm pleased to hear that you have the same take on Daniel's work. He's already responded and I'm hoping that his system blossoms. I can see the potential.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Hi guys,

I'm popping in from Disqus. Sorry to hear that some are having difficulties using the Disqus system. I'm going to keep an eye on this thread so we know what's going on.

    Thanks,
    Daniel @ Disqus
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Thanks for stopping by, Daniel.

Can you explain the distinction between reply and comment?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
You can add a new comment or rely to an existing one.

Comment threads are structured in this system.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Right. Thanks, Daniel.

OK: When do you sleep:-) ?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Now and then. :)
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Clearly not "now"!
  • Jo · 1 year ago
I used it OK but I think the first time I commented without realizing theire were comments below, ah let me check again.
Yep done it again. No suggestion that there is anything else to read. So now conversation.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
    Jo,

    Appreciate you checking it out.
  • Jo · 1 year ago
And where is the community thing? Don't see that at all.
  • Wally Bock · 1 year ago
I just tried to leave a comment on the Memorial Day post. No joy. There's no comment box.
  • Steve Roesler · 1 year ago
Well, I hope that hasn't happened before. Thanks for the heads-up. Am back today following the thread and trying to sort things out.

    Hi Steve

Encountered Disqus before - only this weekend - but not sure if it's a 'help'. I mean, I read blog/articles and when appropriate I join in the conversation. Don't see the 'benefit' of entering/joining a community? A blog, its readers and commenters is a community on its own, not?

Too many 'communities' are poppin-up any way. If you like that, be my guest, if you don't - why be sometimes almost forced to join?

So I'll leave my comment unverified - I'm sure you know who I am ;-)

    Hi, Karin,

Well, that's helpful. My intent was not to create a new community since, as you mention, we already have one:-) My hope was that it would be an easier way for people to follow the threads of a particular conversation, which it does provide.

Will make a decision by week's end.

    Hi Steve

It seems if you not 'join' the Disqus community you can't follow the comments any other way. I use co.mments to keep track of conversations, but the Disqus system won't let it track it. That's one way to get 'clients' ;-)

    Karin,

Hmm. I know that Daniel from Disqus is tracking this thread. Daniel, how about this?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Hi Karin, you can track comments by looking at your profile.

There are RSS feeds as well.
  • Karin H · 1 year ago
Hi Daniel, nice to meet you.

what I meant was co.mments, which captures - if I want - all the conversations I want to follow - doesn't work on blogs where Disqus is involved.
I like to keep things simple, all in one place, 'cos like most of us, I'm pretty busy and might not find time to check 3,4, 5 or more conversation trackers daily.
